Perez, Rodriguez & Ruiz Welcomes Gomez
(New York)—Perez, Rodriguez & Ruiz, LLP are pleased to announce that Jaime Juan Gomez, formerly with Martinez, Calderon & Smith of Philadelphia, has joined their firm at their Manhattan office.
Gomez will concentrate his practice in the area of criminal law, focusing on cases involving drug offenses and other non-violent crime. Gomez served in a similar capacity with his prior firm for seven years, and has built a reputation as a tenacious fighter for justice, particularly on behalf of recent, non-English speaking immigrants of limited means.
“I have a mission,†Gomez said. “To me, the man or woman in the dock could be my brother, sister, or even myself. That is why I will fight for my clients as if they were my own.â€
Alfonso Perez, Principal of Perez, Rodriguez & Ruiz cited Gomez’s enviable record of success as a defender.
“He has gone up against some of the toughest prosecutors, and he has prevailed in better than 90 percent of cases argued. It was this impressive background that attracted our attention, and we are very pleased to have him join our firm.â€
One of his most famous cases (State of Pennsylvania v. Bedoya) involved a charge of large scale drug sales, in which a mentally handicapped recent immigrant was accused of being the mastermind behind a major heroin operation while employed as caretaker for a prominent Philadelphia philanthropist. Gomez proved that despite circumstantial evidence, his client had been the victim of a case of mistaken identity and an overzealous prosecutor. A further investigation was launched, and the actual kingpin discovered and prosecuted.
Mr. Gomez received his JD degree from Villanova University Law School in 2004, and his BA from Villanova in 2001. He is a Board Member of the Northeastern Chapter of the National Alliance for Justice, and is a member of the Council For Immigrants’ Rights.
Perez, Rodriguez & Ruiz was founded in 1981 as a firm serving primarily the Caribbean immigrant community in the areas of criminal law, small business law, and employment law. The firm has branches in the Boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn.
